Environmental Issues impacting the
Creek & Wetlands
The Kororoit Creek & Deanside Wetlands are facing some big environmental issues due to the increasing pressure placed on the system from human activity, things such as habitat loss, invasive weeds, pest animals, and rubbish/plastic pollution. As you walk around the creek & wetlands, many of these environmental challenges are obvious, while others are more hidden but just as destructive. Below are some of the challenges the waterways are facing which we need to be mindful of and work together to rectify.

House cats being let outside (particularly at night) are responsible for the deaths of 61 Million birds each year.
Feral cats kill a further 255 Million native birds each each, resulting in more than 300 Million birds being killed each year in Australia by cats alone. 99% of the birds that are killed by cats are native.
European rabbits adversely affect over 300 threatened native species in Australia
There are 1.7 Million foxes in Australia which kill 300 Million native animals each year
There are 1,700 threatened species of flora and fauna in Australia. 1 in 6 birds are threatened with extinction, while 43 mammals and 32 reptiles are listed as endangered. Australia has the highest rate of extinction anywhere in the world.
